WIP 35 - Implementing the Pediatric Anti-Racism Curriculum (PARC) as part of Pediatric Residency Education at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and Rady Children's Hospital Program
Resident Physician Rady Children's Hospital San Diego San Diego, California, United States
Background: There has been growing recognition of racism and ensuing health inequities. Despite increasing efforts to address these issues, disparities persist in the delivery of pediatric healthcare. Pediatric residency programs play a crucial role in shaping future physicians and have an opportunity to foster a culture of inclusivity and equity. There is a lack of comprehensive research exploring the impact of educational interventions focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within pediatric residency programs. The Pediatric Anti-Racism Curriculum (PARC) was designed by pediatric hospitalists in 2022 to examine and address racism in healthcare. To date, PARC has not been studied after implementation within pediatric residency education. Objective: The study seeks to address the need for promoting a more inclusive and equitable healthcare environment by implementing PARC within pediatric residency education and examining its effects. Study goals: •Assess changes in resident knowledge and understanding regarding DEI principles, cultural humility, and implicit biases. •Measure changes in resident attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs related to racism and health inequity in healthcare. •Examine the impact of PARC on resident behaviors regarding patient care, communication, and collaboration with diverse patient populations. •Explore resident perceptions regarding the effectiveness of PARC, relevance, and potential areas for improvement. Design/Methods: IRB approval was granted by UCSD Institutional Review Board. PARC materials were emailed to residents before each discussion session. Surveys were created using Redcap and emailed to residents. Anonymous demographic and pre-survey responses were collected for 1 month. After the last session of PARC, post-surveys will be emailed to residents and responses will be gathered until 12/31/23. Volunteer residents will form focus groups to discuss with a third-party investigator the implementation of PARC with funds provided by AAP-CA3. Data from the focus groups and surveys will be recorded through Redcap and analyzed by 2/1/24.
