Session
Description: With increased understanding of the social and structural determinants of health, the field of pediatrics has reached a critical inflection point in how to center children and families in the academic mission. Community partnership has represented a cornerstone of public health for decades supported by an evidence base demonstrating its potential to increase access to care, enhance research, and achieve health equity. However, use of community partnership remains nascent in academic pediatrics. Efforts towards partnership have been fragmented, not equitably applied to all populations, and often misaligned with evidence-based practice. While well intentioned, community partnered work without attention to core principles of community partnership may lead to collaborations that perpetuate cycles of injustice and harm. The urgency to appropriately center community partnership into the academic mission has increased with recent requirements to address health equity from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Joint Commission, and National Committee for Quality Assurance. Concurrently, patient centered outcomes and community partnership have become highly encouraged or required by research funding agencies such as the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and National Institutes of Health. As community partnership becomes more of a visible aspiration in the academic mission to drive clinical care, research, and education, approaches must be informed by evidence-based approaches, ethical practices, and authenticity with respect to partnership and resource provision. In this session, Dr. Jean Raphael, APA President, will provide an overview of the plenary. This introduction will be followed by top abstracts and presentations from experts in community partnership.
