Session

Description: There is evidence supporting the role of direct observation in improvement of certain entrustable professional activities for medical students. However, clinical educators face multiple barriers to implementing tools such as direct observation for formative and summative feedback as well as for assessment. Some common barriers include varying levels of learners in a clinical environment, lack of time in busy clinical practices, disengaged faculty and a busy learning environment with multiple learners and diverse demands. During this workshop, we will present evidence-based articles and strategies highlighting the value of direct observation in clinical teaching. Attendees will then work in small groups to problem-solve and formulate strategies to overcome barriers to direct observation in various clinical environments. Each small group will focus on one barrier and strategize how direct observation can be implemented effectively and efficiently. This will be followed by a large group report back session during which participants will be able to reflect on lessons learned and pose questions on challenges they face. Attendees will leave this workshop with a plan of action to create an opportunity for direct observation in their own clinical environment. Following this interactive team activity, we will have an abstract session highlighting a hot topic in medical student education presented by a chosen abstract submission followed by questions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the value of direct observations as a tool for assessment through an evidence-based literature review.
  • Recognize strategies to mitigate common barriers to successful direct observation.
  • Formulate plans of action to create opportunities for direct observation in various clinical environments and levels of learners.
