Workshop

Description: Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography (TnECHO) is increasingly recognized as a useful tool in assessment of hemodynamic status and management of cardiovascular compromise in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. It’s extremely valuable in assessing patients with shock and targeting specific interventions. However, the widespread use of TnECHO has been hampered by limited opportunities to learn the skills. Training in echocardiography is a complex process that, in addition to thorough theoretical knowledge, requires hands-on training.
Proposed workshop will have 15 echocardiographic simulators capable of simulating a full range of neonatal echocardiography views and scanning modes. The main simulator screen displays the full range of 17 echocardiographic views and the side screen displays the position and motion of the cutting planes through a three-dimensional heart model. The system includes a software module to perform hemodynamic measurements from specific video clip images. The learner will be introduced to the standard 17 echocardiographic views with a hands-on approach using the simulator.
Learners will practice 6/17 echocardiographic views in a term infant with shock through following views: parasternal short and long axis, apical 4-chamber, apical 5-chamber, and sub-costal sagittal views to rapidly assess cardiac contractility, evaluate LV %FS, LV cardiac output and preload status by evaluating inferior vena cava size. The workshop comprises a 30-minute introduction and review of the standard views and 60-minute hands-on practice. Each simulator will be used by 4 learners and 60 learners can participate in the workshop. Leaders and Co-Leaders have extensive experience in using TnECHO in their daily practice.

Learning Objectives:

Know the focused standard echocardiographic views required for rapid assessment of shock
Able to rapidly assess cardiac function on eyeballing and semi-quantitative assessment - distinguish normal from grossly reduced myocardial contractility, and to guide fluid versus inotropic therapy
Able to assess IVC collapsibility, left ventricular cardiac output (LVO) and left ventricle fraction shortening (%FS)
