Workshop
Description: By popular demand, we are conducting workshops that build Medical Critical Race Theory (MedCRT) skills and framework when engaging in patient care, medical education, research, and advocacy. In 2022, our initial MedCRT workshop (“Critical Race Theory in Medicine (MedCRT): Origins, Applications, & Future Translation to Education, Clinical Practice, & Research”) introduced the construct of MedCRT, comparing it to the Biomedical Model and the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) Model when engaging in patient care, medical education and research. In 2023, based upon audience demands in 2022, our second MedCRT workshop (“Critical Race Theory in the Exam Room: Applying Medical CRT to Physician-Patient Relationships, Patient Care, and Advocacy) took a deep dive into applying MedCRT principles to patient care. Both workshops provided multimedia, hands-on practical activities, were heavily attended, very well-received, and highly rated (overall rating 4.9/5 in 2022 & 2023). The majority of audience members both years commented that more time is needed to explore this topic.
Therefore, based upon PAS audience demand, we are proposing the workshop “Critical Race Theory in Medical Education: Applying Medical CRT Principles to Teaching Learners about Health Equity.” This will be an interactive, multi-media, hands-on, practical workshop that will delve into applying MedCRT principles to educating medical learners about health equity. Participants will (1) review the principles of MedCRT,1 (2) apply the “Ask ‘Why’ 5 Times” framework2 for interrogating health inequities with learners, and (3) write learning objectives to apply MedCRT framework to teaching learners didactically and at the bedside.
