Workshop
Description: When the COVID-19 pandemic first appeared, the educational landscape underwent an extraordinary upheaval that forced institutions to quickly switch to virtual platforms in a matter of days. As a result of this abrupt change, educators and learners had minimal time to adapt to the new educational environment. Medical education, like many other disciplines, has faced the challenges of these rapid changes and continues to evolve as new norms emerge. Notably, many educators are still grappling with technology-enhanced teaching models, struggling to delineate the subtle differences between blended and flipped models, or between blended and hybrid approaches. Despite these challenges, these models are rooted in sound instructional design principles, each offering their unique structure and advantages. In addition to these approaches, another format has been added to the technology-enhanced teaching model spectrum, which is called Hybrid-Flexible (HyFlex). HyFlex seamlessly amalgamates the components of hybrid learning into a flexible course structure, affording learners the autonomy to choose between in-person classroom attendance, online participation, or a blend of both modalities. This workshop will introduce participants to the emerging concept of HyFlex teaching design principles, elucidating the distinctions among online, blended, hybrid, and flipped learning within the context of their fundamental elements. Through active participation and interactive discussions, attendees will engage in a critical examination of the feasibility of HyFlex learning, challenges, and opportunities in graduate medical education programs. The discussion will also include the implementation of effective assessment strategies, including the examination of faculty and learners' roles and responsibilities within the HyFlex framework.
