Workshop
Description: This session will inspire attendees and provide first steps to get involved in research. This workshop will empower participants to engage in research by providing practical steps in how to (1) identify feasible research questions relevant to the interest, skills, and resources of the investigator, (2) refine research questions and study design, and (3) identify and utilize resources at their institution and beyond.
In presentations and break-out discussions, we will present on how to identify a research question (including through identifying evidence gaps in published research, clinical or lived experiences, and identifying available data sources). We will then describe considerations for refining a research question by applying the FINER criteria (is the proposed topic Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, and Relevant?) and working to match a research question to an appropriate study design and data source. We will then break into groups. Each table will review the background section of one of 3 pre-selected research articles and work together on identifying the study’s objectives and feasible design(s) that may answer that question. Two tables will be assigned each article and during a “report out” will then discuss their responses with the other table assigned the same topic, to compare and discuss responses. Comparing responses between groups will demonstrate that multiple approaches can address a research topic. Next, we will help participants identify resources they will need, including mentors and collaborators. We will then wrap up by inviting participants to find their passion to get started on developing a research project.
