Workshop
Description: Stakes are high in healthcare, with decisions having potentially life-threatening consequences. When it comes to patient care, providers often stigmatize failure and associate it with guilt and shame. Similarly, the culture of academic medicine often promotes perfectionism and success; achievement in medical training is marked by standardized exams and academic promotions are traditionally tied to productivity. However, embracing failure as a catalyst for growth is paramount in an ever-changing healthcare ecosystem. This workshop aims to equip participants with the mindset and tools necessary to address and embrace failure in both professional and personal settings.
We will draw from John C. Maxwell's "Failing Forward" framework and Amy Edmondson’s work on psychological safety to teach participants actionable strategies to identify, communicate, understand, and leverage failure for growth, both individually and as a team. This workshop will utilize multiple educational modalities by blending personal reflection, small and large group discussions, and interactive exercises including developing a failure CV. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from and share their failures with the wider audience in a psychologically safe environment. By attending this workshop, participants will gain the skills to derive meaning from their failures and learn to create an environment that embraces an open discussion and a healthier approach to mistakes.
