Workshop
Description: Medical directors have tremendous opportunity to advance academic medicine and spur quality improvement and patient safety initiatives through their leadership role. According to the W.H.O., women represent 70% of the medical workforce but fill less than 40% of leadership roles globally. Unlike clinician educator or research pathways, the road to advance through directorship is not well outlined. Women are often selected into administrative roles without clear job descriptions, leadership training, or effective mentorship. Research has identified barriers to women's career progression, but there remains a paucity of forums or strategies to advance women in leadership. This workshop aims to fill a knowledge gap and educate participants about medical directorship and discuss challenges and barriers commonly encountered on this career path. The session is led by a diverse group of women who hold leadership roles in a range of subspecialties, to include cardiac intensive care, gastroenterology, hospital medicine, pediatric intensive care, and pulmonology. We will discuss how women in medicine can be better prepared, supported, and encouraged while pursuing administrative pathways. We will also equip participants with tools for advocating for research and quality improvement, all while also working toward advancement of one’s own career.
This interactive session is applicable to a broad spectrum of physicians and will be useful for both new trainees as well as seasoned faculty. While the workshop highlights those who identify as female, we encourage all genders to attend, learn, and interact with us.
