Description: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in premature infants and is the most common form of chronic lung disease in infancy. Despite great strides in understanding the mechanistic basis of the disease over the last two decades, novel therapies to prevent disease have not been discovered. In this session, 4 physician scientists will present data on novel therapies to prevent BPD that have not only been evaluated in preclinical small/large animal models but are in various stages of clinical testing in human trials.

Stem cell therapy for BPD - Dr. Bernard Thebaud will provide expert opinion on the use of mesenchymal stromal stem cell therapy/exosomes for preventing BPD. He will review data from published studies as well present updates on ongoing studies.

A brain-sparing steroid for BPD - Dr. Venkatesh Sampath will discuss data gleaned from rodent models of BPD and baboons on ciclesonide, a synthetic glucocorticoid that is lung-protective but brain-sparing. Plans for clinical translational will be presented.

Biotherapeutics in BPD – Dr. Vivek Lal will discuss the rationale and development of a live biotherapeutic product therapy that will alter the neutrophilic inflammation cascade and prevent chronic lung disease in premature infants.

MicroRNAs and small molecule therapy in BPD - Dr. Vineet Bhandari will discuss the biological basis and provide current data towards the progress of using specific miR-inhibitors or mimics as well as small molecules in the prevention of BPD.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to identify different novel approaches being investigated in preclinical models to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infants.
Upon completion, participants will be able to understand the scientific rationale underlying stem cell, brain-sparing corticosteroids, microbiome modulation and gene silencing therapies in BPD.
Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize the use of small/large animal preclinical models of BPD for drug development and stages of clinical translation.
