Session
Description: The alarming rise in the number of children crossing international borders, as evidenced by over 152,000 unaccompanied minors encountered at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2022, underlines the need to address the escalating threats to their physical and psychological well-being. The session will delve into the concept of “triple trauma,” examining the challenges faced by vulnerable children. We will explore how children face challenges that lead their families to flee their homes; endure harrowing journeys at border crossings and encampments; and confront difficulties and disappointment during resettlement and reintegration. The panelists will delve into practical approaches, sustainable solutions, and collaborative efforts that bridge the gaps in addressing the complex challenges faced by refugee children. This session will shed light on strategies that pediatricians can adopt to address the unique needs of children who are refugees and asylum seekers, focusing on promoting resilience, providing trauma-informed care, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders to ensure a holistic and nurturing environment for these young individuals.
