Session
Description: Over 80% of antibiotics given to children are prescribed in the outpatient setting, and outpatient Antimicrobial Stewardship (AS) is now a target area for focused attention. Despite that, most institutions do not yet have robust outpatient AS programs, and very few have dedicated support for outpatient AS efforts.
During this session, national leaders in the field of outpatient antimicrobial stewardship will highlight novel approaches to outpatient pediatric stewardship and discuss useful and effective outpatient stewardship interventions and techniques. The topics will be presented by leaders from urgent care, pediatric infectious diseases, and general pediatrics. Dr Vernacchio will discuss successful strategies to reduce antibiotic duration for common pediatric infections. Dr Nedved will share large national collaboratives and their success in the pediatric urgent care clinics. Dr Poole will focus on communication strategies in outpatient ASP. Dr Patel will emphasize the role of pharmacists in outpatient ASP. Dr Rueda Altez will bring a focus on cross-cultural ad cross-language problems and health equity in outpatient antibiotic prescribing.
This session will therefore provide practical tools for participants to improve the quality of their antibiotic prescribing, will address important issues of equity in medicine, and will be relevant to general pediatricians, hospitalists, emergency medicine, urgent care and infectious diseases specialists, and all those who work in emergency departments, urgent care centers, ambulatory clinics, and ambulatory health care systems.
