Session
Description: In this session, Drs. Moira and Peter Szilagyi will receive the 2024 Academic Pediatric Association (APA) George Armstrong award in recognition of their remarkable contributions and leadership in addressing the health and well-being of children through research, education, health care innovations, and advocacy. The focus of this session will be how our field can create an impactful and sustainable vision for children. At present, child health in America is characterized by a patchwork of solutions and sporadic attention to the unique needs of children. In order to advance child health, we need to establish a collective vision for children. In their joint talk, the Szilagyis will describe how they created and implemented a vision for children within their career journeys. Both speakers will articulate the key components of what is necessary to realize a vision, including purpose, passion, and partnerships. Moira Szilagyi will focus on child welfare and relational care. Peter Szilagyi will discuss preventive care delivery with a focus on immunizations and health insurance. Following the addresses by the honorees, we will have presentations and Q&A with a number of impactful academic pediatricians discussing their vision, passion, and strategies used to achieve their visions. The session will conclude with reflections, wrap-up, and a challenge to audience members from APA President Jean Raphael and the Szilagyis.
