Workshop
Description: In 2022, the APA Anti-Racism and Diversity Task Force designed and presented an Anti-Racism and Equity Toolkit, providing a compilation of resources to integrate and operationalize anti-racism and equity into medical education and the workplace. Since then, a number of states have passed legislation limiting and/or banning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, immediately affecting pediatric educators’ and leaders’ ability to develop and deliver curricula that prepares emerging pediatricians to recognize and mitigate bias and provide high-quality, equitable care to all children. During this session, we will review the current legislative landscape on DEI education and utilize the AAMC Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Planning Toolkit as a framework to develop a list of DEI educational priorities that comply with respective state mandates and guide participants to construct specific, feasible next steps for the successful implementation of each DEI educational priority at their local institutions. The toolkit outlines nine tasks when planning an organization’s DEI processes; we will focus on Task 2 (“Assessing the existing landscape”), Task 3 (“Identify leverage points and challenges” - SWOT Analysis), Task 5 (“Set clear and realistic objectives, supporting tasks, and action steps required to achieve goals”), and Task 9 (“Prepare the written plan”). Upon conclusion of the workshop, participants will retain access to a shared document inclusive of all the proposed solutions generated during the workshop discussions.
