Workshop
Description: Over the past decade, electronic health record (EHR) has become more powerful and sophisticated than just a documentation tool. This technology now sits at the intersection of research and medical practice, allowing clinicians to extract real-time patient data, analyze response to interventions, and improve healthcare. This workshop will give participants an overview of common EHR database structures, accuracy of data, and types of data commonly recorded in EHRs. Participants will have the opportunity to customize their hands-on experience, choosing from 3 different learning stations: Epic® Slicer Dicer, RedCap importing, and Microsoft Excel data analysis functions. Bringing a laptop computer will enhance the participant’s experience. Participants will learn how to apply these tools in their research, quality improvement, and other scholarly projects. The workshop is organized by pediatricians, including those who are Epic® certified physician builders and have had extensive experience in utilizing these reporting tools at an individual, division, and institution level. There will be a combination of short presentations, facilitated small group discussion, and hands-on application of these 3 reporting and analytic tools. Participants will have the opportunity to share common barriers to obtaining EHR data and learn basic terminology that will improve communication with data analysts at participants’ home institutions. By the end of this workshop, participants will be empowered with data extraction and analysis skills to jumpstart their own projects immediately.
We encourage participants to bring their laptops for the most optimal hands-on experience.
