Workshop
Description: Active learning, as one of the building blocks of adult learning principles, provides inspiration to the teacher and energizes the learner. This workshop will focus on inspiring attendees to incorporate interactive techniques using an evidence-based Best Practices Guide to Teaching and Learning compiled by the AAP’s Committee on Continuing Medical Education. Attendees will have the opportunity to experiment with strategies to introduce active learning methods to teaching sessions and article writing using multiple, easy to implement practices. Attendees will also learn about adult learning theory and the characteristics of an effective teacher and will reflect on factors that impact learning and practice change.
We will incorporate active and interactive learning throughout the session. The session will begin with a needs assessment to poll the audience and solicit input regarding factors that impact learning and the characteristics of a good teacher. A small group activity will follow where learners will contribute their own ideas and experiences towards utilization of applicable tools to encourage active learning in various teaching modalities. Generated ideas will be shared with all participants via a debrief session. Finally, the session will end with a commitment to change from participants and review of available resources.
In summary, the learner at this session will gain active learning skills through an experiential process and leave with tools that will enable incorporation of these teaching methods into his/her/their own activities.
