Workshop
Description: Are you a trainee actively involved in research, QI, and medical education projects that take HOURS of your life but haven’t actually led to anything you can add to your CV? Are you interested in learning how to maximize scholarly output and making an action plan to do so? Then this workshop is for you!
Data from the Pediatric Academic Societies conferences found that only 44.6% of abstracts went on to be published in a peer-reviewed journal (1, 2). This may inhibit career growth and delay academic advancement (3). Many trainees participate in medical education and quality improvement initiatives that can be more challenging to publish and therefore may be under-recognized (2, 4). This workshop will focus on how trainees can get due credit for their hard work in scholarly pursuits with a variety of outputs.
Participants will work-through pitfalls and barriers encountered in case vignettes and discuss best practices in academic projects from start to finish. Through active learning techniques, we will review strategies for planning, implementing, and disseminating projects, with an emphasis on leveraging social media, non-peer reviewed literature, conferences and national working groups to highlight work. Participants will leave with a framework, resources, and commitment to maximizing their scholarly output.
