Workshop
Description: In 2020, firearms became the leading cause of pediatric deaths in the United States. Studies have shown that 66% of parents including 58% of parents who own firearms believe pediatricians should ask about firearm ownership. They are especially interested in learning about firearm safe storage techniques. However in primary care clinics, only 50% of pediatric residents and fewer attendings counsel patients on firearms. In the pediatric inpatient setting, less than 3% of families were screened for the presence of firearms in their households. Of those found to have firearms, over 80% did not receive firearm safety anticipatory guidance. We as pediatricians are missing out on an essential opportunity for intervention. As doctors who often have conversations with adolescent patients with a variety of mental health diseases and parents of curious and playful toddlers, firearm anticipatory guidance is a lifesaving tool. In this workshop, participants will learn about the current firearm epidemic in the USA, the interplay between firearms and suicide, the importance of safe storage, and receive training on how to broach the topic of firearm anticipatory guidance in a culturally sensitive manner. We will also discuss different manners of teaching trainees about firearm anticipatory guidance.
