Workshop
Description: In today's healthcare landscape, the importance of quality improvement and patient safety (QI&PS) knowledge and application cannot be overstated. However, for early career physicians with a keen interest in QI&PS, navigating the various career paths can be challenging. Recognizing this need for guidance, our interactive workshop offers a comprehensive session applicable to all subspecialties, designed to provide participants with important steps to become experts in QI&PS and leaders within their learning healthcare systems.
Led by a diverse group of QI&PS leaders from various organizations and roles, this workshop utilizes quality improvement tools, including a modified failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) and a key driver diagram, to create personalized career maps. In the first exercise, we use the FMEA method to address potential career obstacles and devise innovative solutions. The second exercise employs a stakeholder analysis to identify influential figures within and outside participants' institutions for valuable mentorship and career guidance. Participants then use insights from the FMEA and stakeholder analysis to build a career plan with a key driver diagram, emphasizing essential elements for advancing expertise in QI&PS.
Throughout the session, we encourage active participation through live polling, word clouds, and sticky notes in an affinity diagram. The collaborative activities foster connections and networking during the workshop and, by the workshop's end, attendees leave with personalized QI&PS career guides, complete with actionable steps to advance their careers.
