Workshop
Description: The decisions made by the government affect every aspect of the lives of the patients we care for daily. Legislation impacts education, housing, healthcare, insurance, immigration policy, social services, etc. As pediatricians, we screen for social determinants of health (SDoH) and provide care and resources to support our patients and their families. According to the American Medical Association (AMA), “voting is a social determinant of health”. We should, therefore, also provide information and resources to families to ensure they have voting access. In this workshop, we will brainstorm productive, non-partisan actions we can implement to increase civic engagement among our patients, their families, and our surrounding communities.
Although the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages pediatricians to vote through their #VoteKids campaign, on average, doctors vote less than the general population. This workshop will also discuss historically successful methods that have increased voter turnout among pediatric trainees and healthcare providers. Lastly, participants will leave this workshop with a customized voting commitment plan and resources to help them become more informed voters.
