Workshop
Description: “Career Fit,” a term highlighted by Shanafelt et al. as the alignment of assigned time for professional activities with meaningful work, has been identified as a determinant of physician well-being. Based on data from APA membership, facilitators of this workshop have expanded on this to conceptualize Global Career Fit and Activity-Specific Career Fit as part of an innovative career development framework through which academic pediatric faculty can evaluate the make-up of their career composition to achieve improved professional well-being.
Just as a thorough clinical assessment of a patient is required before developing a management plan, we must also take time to assess our current career components before developing a plan for career improvement. To this end, this workshop will build on last year’s “Optimizing Career-Fit to Promote Professional Well-Being” workshop by further exploring the concept of meaningful work.
Part one of the workshop will examine the current state of participants’ Career Fit by identifying the meaningfulness of various components of their professional responsibilities while considering the time spent on those components. Part two will utilize the Organizational Psychology framework of “job crafting” to help participants create an action plan for improving Global and Activity-Specific Career Fit. Job crafting is defined as tailoring one’s professional responsibilities to better align with their interests, strengths, and meaningful work. Participants will utilize job crafting strategies to identify steps to increase time spent on previously identified meaningful work components, leaving the workshop with a Career Fit action plan they can act upon within three months.
