Workshop
Description: Undergraduate and graduate medical education recognize the importance and strive to improve the diversity of its workforce. Most medical education institutions have adopted a holistic review process in recruitment and selection. This process is considered integral to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the goal of training physicians that truly represent the population they serve. However, this process can be challenging as programs navigate in light of proposed or adopted state laws prohibiting equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in higher education and the 2023 United States Supreme Court decision to end race-based admission policies in U.S. colleges and universities.
This workshop will review how we define and approach diversity, equity and inclusion in recruitment and selection to improve representation in the pediatric workforce. Participants will work in small groups to outline important applicant experiences, attributes, competencies and scholarly metrics (E-A-C-Ms) and how these align with their institutional and program priorities for health. Workshop leaders will review past approaches to achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion in undergraduate and graduate medical education as well as review the core principles of holistic review. Participants will then return to the small group format to discuss the current challenges to holistic review integration and brainstorm approaches to navigate these challenges. Finally, the groups will engage in a large group discussion to share these approaches and next steps, which they may implement at their home institution.
