Workshop
Description: This workshop will be designed for all pediatricians (both generalists and subspecialists) to provide an overview of contraceptive counseling for adolescents using a reproductive justice approach and within the new landscape of Post-Roe America. With more restrictions on abortion access in place, pediatricians’ ability to offer patient-centered contraceptive counseling and healthcare navigation is paramount and can be provided in a range of care settings.
This workshop will describe the scope and impact of federal and state level reproductive health policies, including abortion access and contraception, parental involvement requirements, and sex education. This brief overview will provide baseline knowledge of the barriers and facilitators of reproductive healthcare and frame why contraceptive counseling and provision is a critical skillset for all pediatricians. We An overview of reproductive justice will be provided as it pertains to comprehensive patient-centered contraceptive counseling and a brief history of contraception injustices and coercion that have occurred in medical settings. The final didactic element will be to provide an overview of contraception methods and various decision aids that are available for patients and clinicians to prime conversations and engage in shared decision-making.
Small groups based on clinical practice settings using case studies will have facilitated discussions led by our expert faculty around topics such as values clarification and bias recognition, eliciting patient values, over-the-counter and pharmacist-initiated birth control, reviewing quick-start strategies, and cultural awareness. Small group participants will have the opportunity to rotate to a different group so they can develop additional familiarity and skills if they choose.
