Workshop
Description: In 2023 alone, more bills targeting transgender and gender diverse (TGD) health were introduced than in the last six years combined, with 15 states currently banning gender affirming care for TGD youth. In this political landscape, nearly 1 in 5 TGD youth live in a state that bans medically necessary and often life saving care, disproportionately affecting racial and social minority groups. In addition to health inequities due to lack of access and worsening mental health outcomes, these bans can lead to secondary trauma on behalf of health care professionals, professional dilemmas as regulations change and gender affirming care clinics close, and even personal attacks including smear campaigns and death threats. Little data exists regarding the effects this has on providers, and we rarely have opportunities to discuss our own fears and concerns or to develop strategies to ensure we continue to personally and professionally thrive in this field. In this collaborative and interactive workshop, we will begin to explore those effects from a personal, professional, and patient lens. Each participant will create a personalized action plan to ensure they leave feeling equipped to continue to provide this essential care. This workshop is highly relevant whether you have decades of experience providing gender affirming care or are a trainee just starting out, and will serve as a safe space to explore concerns, learn from one another, and offer strategies for continued success.
