Workshop
Description: Passionate about medical education (ME)? Unsure how to translate your passion into a career in ME? Contemplating next-steps as a mid-career medical educator? While medical educators are integral to academic pediatrics, only recently has ME become more professionalized as a career path through increased scholarship, recognition, and value. ME careers are diverse; there is no one, specific structured professional career path. Critical for ME career planning and success is access to role models, networking, mentoring, sponsoring, and specific advising and guidance.
The National Academy of Distinguished Educators in Pediatrics (NADEP, https://www.academicpeds.org/groups-networks/national-academy-of-distinguished-educators-in-pediatrics-nadep/) is an honorary service academy of diverse pediatricians with the goals of advocating for medical educators through the advancement of the professional development of pediatric educators, educational scholarship, and educational programs.
NADEP members will facilitate, engaging small group discussions promoting reflection, collaboration, networking, and continued mentoring through discussions about planning, building, and sustaining a successful ME career. Participants will consider their passions and talents in medical education to guide goal setting. Facilitators will share medical education career paths, opportunities, and lessons learned. Participants will choose 2 topics for small-group discussions: medical education scholarship; leadership and administration; mentoring, networking, and collaboration; and/or sustaining and continuing to advance a ME career as a mid-career faculty. Participants will develop an action plan for next steps to accomplish their career goals. A handout with tips, lessons learned, and references, will be provided. Participants will be provided with the opportunity for continued longitudinal mentoring over the subsequent year.
