Session
Description: The question of resident work hours has been a intensively discussed topic within the field of graduate medical education. Over the past decades in graduate medical education training, several guidelines and policies have been enacted to place limits on housestaff work hours. There are clear benefits to establishing duty hour limits, including improvements in emotional and mental health, reduced resident fatigue, and some enhancements in patient safety metrics. However, critics of conservative duty hour policies point to issues in patient continuity, the rigor of resident training, and hospital staffing constraints as limitations to enforcing restricted duty hour policies. Thus, duty hour policies can be created with sufficient ambiguity to accommodate both schools of thought.
During this Special Interest Group (SIG) session, we plan to hold a live debate surrounding this topic, representing two sides: proponents of a resident workweek with a maximum of 50 hours versus one with a maximum of 70 hours. We will open the floor to live audience participation for voting and Q&A submissions. The debate will involve opening statements from both sides, followed by a rebuttal session and a closing argument session. At the conclusion of these organizing sessions, the audience will be able to vote for the final winner.
