Session
Description: The Injury Equity Framework (Kendi & Macy, 2023) presents a theoretical basis for identifying and analyzing factors that influence who is injured, the severity of injuries and the injury outcome using an equity lens. The framework integrates the Cliff of Good Health (Jones et al, 2009) and the Haddon Matrix (Haddon, 1980), overlaying historical and current societal factors that intersect with community, family and individual factors to contribute to injury inequities. The Injury Equity Matrix is a practical tool for analyzing injury events and patterns of injuries within the context of the Injury Equity Framework.
In this session we will begin with an update on pediatric injury inequities and an overview of the Injury Equity Framework and Matrix. We will utilize the Pediatric Injury Equity Review (PIER) process, developed by Dr. Kendi and colleagues, as a model for centering childhood injury prevention and mitigation strategies in equity. The session leaders, all with expertise in the injury inequities discussed, will then facilitate discussions which will allow participants to work through the PIER process with case examples using strategies to address leading causes of childhood injury, including child passenger safety, safe sleep, and water safety. This will be followed by an open panel discussion. Participants will gain skills in the application of these tools for the development of strategies to prevent pediatric injuries at the local, regional, or state level. This process has potential to reveal novel approaches to eliminate long-standing inequities in injury outcomes.
