Session
Description: Pediatric hospital medicine fellowships require a community hospital rotation to enhance and complement their learning in university-based hospitals. Working with fellows in community hospitals pose unique benefits and challenges to community hospital-based pediatricians. This 90-minute workshop will equip you with practical strategies and teaching skills for working with PHM fellows in community hospitals.
The workshop will begin with insights from both community pediatric hospitalists and PHM fellowship directors about the role of community hospitals in graduate medical education. They will highlight the benefits and common barriers to effective teaching in community settings, and describe how community hospital rotations fit into the larger PHM fellow curriculum. Then, participants will have a chance to participate in two of the following four breakout sessions: (1) Promoting Autonomy in Learners, (2) Developing Effective Curricula for the Community Setting, (3) Teaching when Time is Limited, and (4) Strategies for Effective Feedback. Each breakout session will share best practices and apply the skills to various community-based scenarios for hands-on practice. Finally, we will have opportunities for participants to share, discuss, and strategize around their own successes and challenges teaching in their own community hospital settings. Leave the workshop with increased confidence to elevate your teaching and positively impact the next generation of pediatric hospitalists at community hospitals.
