Session
Description: This is the second session for the combined Complex Care and Patient and Family-Centered Care SIG. Family engagement is essential to the field of pediatrics. While the focus has predominantly been on engaging families in the care of an individual child, there is growing recognition of the importance in engaging families on systems-level initiatives that impact the care that they receive. Families who interact frequently with the healthcare system, particularly those who have children with complex medical needs, have unique perspectives that are vital in the development, and implementation of practices and services that impact the care of all children.
This workshop will help participants identify ways to incorporate family engagement into their scholarship. It will include symposium-style talks on the importance of family engagement in scholarship and showcase real-world examples of family engagement in education, research, and policy. This will be followed by a moderated panel discussion with the speakers. We will end with a small-group exercise where participants can develop ways to engage families in new or existing projects/initiatives followed by a large group report out to share ideas. We will conclude with a business meeting for each of our respective interests groups.
