Session
Description: Sickle cell disease is a multi-organ disease that may impact short and long term kidney function by a variety of mechanisms. Recent studies have provided important insights into the pathogenesis of sickle cell-associated kidney disease, including defining the role of specific genetic, immunologic and biochemical risk factors for development and progression of kidney disease. Identifying early stage kidney disease and defining the optimal timing and type of intervention remain challenging.
The overall goal of this session is to provide the audience with an understanding of the pathophysiology of kidney involvement in sickle cell disease (and sickle trait), the factors that contribute to development of kidney disease progression, biomarkers for acute and chronic kidney disease, and management and outcome of end stage kidney disease.
