Session
Description: Human milk is the recommended diet for virtually all newborns, including those born very preterm. Increasingly, clinicians have access to nutritional information about human milk through labeled products such as pasteurized donor human milk and point-of-care human milk analyzers in the clinical space. Interpreting this information and applying it to clinical decision-making is challenging because currently no standards exist for how human milk nutrient data are derived or reported. Understanding how analytic techniques differ, and their strengths and limitations, can assist the clinician in accurately assessing dietary intakes and intervening appropriately to promote optimal growth, thereby improving growth-related outcomes.
The overall aim of this symposium is to inform neonatal clinicians about key issues related to analyzing macronutrients and energy in human milk, highlighting aspects that directly impact decisions about infant feeding and fortificaiton strategies. Our four expert speakers will cover the following topics related to human milk macronutrient analysis and its translation into the clinical environment: 1) Variability of human milk: so what? (why clinicians need to know about human milk analysis); 2) Gold standards for protein, carbohydrates, fat, and energy in human milk (what clinicians need to know about human milk analysis; 3) Experiences integrating human milk analysis is a clinical setting; 4) Considerations with donor human milk.
Attendees will leave this session with new knowledge about human milk nutritional data and empowered to use this information to make better decisions involving the nutritional care of very preterm and other nutritionally-vulnerable newborn populations.
