Description: Generative AI has the potential to play a transformative role in education and has gained increased popularity recently. Health professional educators can benefit significantly from the use of generative AI. These tools can automate and enhance various aspects of medical education, patient care and faculty development. When utilized effectively, they can assist educators in tasks such as academic writing, creating personalized lesson plans, generating patient care scenarios for simulation, and automating assessment and feedback processes. With the future of our learners at stake, medical educators need to determine how best to utilize these innovative tools, avoid pitfalls while exploring the breadth of their transformative potential.
This symposium will introduce foundational concepts required to understand the capabilities and limitations of generative AI, while providing examples of its potential through 6 short presentations. We will highlight the use of AI in academic activities such as brainstorming ideas and drafting manuscripts and letters. Following this, we will showcase how AI can be used for clinical teaching, educational content development, creating simulation scenarios, instructional materials, guiding future faculty development including evaluations and assessments. We will also describe patient care applications such as automated documentation within electronic health records, and enhancement of communication with families. We will conclude the symposium with a discussion of the future opportunities and challenges that AI presents, including the need to identify and avoid misinformation. We will conclude with 20 minutes for discussion, questions and answers for audience engagement.
