Description: In this country, procedural sedation is provided to thousands of children daily by multi-disciplinary and multi-subspecialty teams. Rare serious adverse events are primarily cardiopulmonary in etiology such as apnea, upper airway obstruction, laryngospasm and hypotension. Without necessary skills, sedation teams may be unable to respond successfully, leading to significant morbidity or mortality. Optimal team performance requires all team members to possess pertinent knowledge as well as resuscitation skills.
Hybrid learning has successfully been adopted into multi-subspecialty and multidisciplinary training pathways. However, there remains a need for competency assessment beyond just fund of knowledge acquisition and retention. Mapping ACGME goals and objectives to an existing sedation curriculum comprised of online modules and sedation case-based simulation (SIM) scenarios optimizes integration into both training and credentialing pathways. Chronological assessment of acquisition and retention of both knowledge and resuscitation skills are crucial to successful training and credentialing pathways. Development and implementation of these novel training pathways must be coupled with outcome metrics, demonstrating long-term retention of knowledge and resuscitation skills. Educational research focused on curricular development and implementation using SIM scenarios provide that link between education and enhanced patient outcomes.
In this panel discussion, pediatricians with expertise in simulation, procedural sedation and educational research will review and discuss literature regarding optimal strategies for procedural sedation training for multi-subspecialty providers. They will also discuss ongoing research in this area and highlight an institution’s experience adopting a strategy.
