Session
Description: 1.
Introduction: Sara Pinneys (USA) and Alfonso Galderisi (USA) will introduce the speakers (5-min).
2. Diagnostic challenges of neonatal hyperglycemia. (20-min)
Michel Polak (France) will discuss the diagnostic pathway for neonatal hyperglycemia in preterm and term infants including the characteristics of monogenic diabetes with neonatal onset and other causes of transient or persistent neonatal hyperglycemia. Current guidelines will be reviewed. (20-min)
3.Therapeutic options for neonatal hyperglycemia: when to treat and how to treat? (20-min)
Elsa Kermorvant will present the pros and cons of early insulin treatment of neonatal hyperglycemia and the preliminary results of the French GALOP trial (oral glybenclamide for neonatal hyperglycemia in preterm infants). The use of sulfonylureas as first line treatment not only for some forms of neonatal monogenic diabetes but also for transient neonatal hyperglycemia of preterm infants will be explored.
4. Evidence from the bench:hyperglycemia and neonatal brain (15-min)
Marianne Berdugo will present experimental evidence on the effect of neonatal hyperglycemia and sulfonylureas treatment on retinal and brain development in rats.
5.Evidence from the clinic:hyperglycemia and neonatal brain (15-min)
Siri Greeley will provide an overview of the effect of neonatal hyperglycemia on long term neurodevelopment, including data from longitudinal cohorts of infants with monogenic neonatal diabetes treated with sulfonylureas.
6. Q&A: 15-min
