Session
Description: When safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines were developed, it was easy to imagine that we were at the beginning of an era when everyone would recognize the stunning power of immunizations at preventing illness and death from infectious diseases. Vaccine hesitancy would be replaced by the public celebrating everyone essential to vaccination efforts. We hoped antivaccine forces would lose their power as people recognized that COVID-19 vaccination had saved millions of lives worldwide- similar to how other childhood vaccines have drastically reduced worldwide morbidity and mortality. The World Health Organization would no longer designate vaccine hesitancy as a top 10 threat to global health. That however is not what happened. Vaccine hesitancy grew in the face of factual vaccine success and its threat to global health has shockingly increased since March 2020.
This panel discussion will examine vaccine hesitancy, how it affects vaccine uptake, and what we have learned about strategies to address it. Given their expertise and experience in counseling patient families with vaccine hesitancy, pediatric healthcare providers are well equipped to lead the charge in identifying strategies to combat vaccine hesitancy and advance global health. With novel vaccines and therapeutics coming to the marketplace (e.g., RSV), identifying effective strategies to overcome vaccine hesitancy is more critical than ever. The panel will discuss communication strategies to prevent and counter vaccine hesitancy, the use of technology-based strategies, a cultural and structural lens approach to address vaccine hesitancy, and educational strategies.
