Session
Description: In 2012 Colorado and Washington State became the first states in the North America to legalize non-medical cannabis for adult use. Canada subsequently legalized non-medical cannabis for adults in 2018, and an additional 19 states within the United States and the District of Columbia have followed suit as of March 2023. With legalization and acceptability propelled by popular/social media, youth and parent perception of risk associated with cannabis use has decreased, and cannabis use among adolescents has stayed stable despite the decreased prevalence of other substance use among youth in the United States. Subsequently, unexpected harms have surfaced, e.g., high rate of poisoning hospitalizations and impacts on mental health among children. This hot topic session will focus on the scientific evidence of the health impacts of cannabis legalization and exposure on children and youth. Dr. Patricia Conrod will review evidence regarding the relationship between cannabis and adolescent brain health. Dr. Lila Amirali will review the association between cannabis use and psychosis. She will also review trends in the prevalence of cannabis-induced psychosis and co-occurring schizophrenia and cannabis use disorders since legalization. Dr. Amy Yule will review the evidence for treatment of co-occurring cannabis use disorders and psychotic spectrum disorders with a focus on treatment program adaptations to address social and health inequities. Dr. Elizabeth Thiele will review the evidence for therapeutic indications for cannabinoids to treat neurologic conditions. Lastly, Dr. Yaron Finkelstein will review the clinical manifestations and outcomes of children poisoned by cannabis products before and after legalization.
