Session
Description: How do we integrate our growing understanding of the health impacts of climate change and environmental issues into our work and institutions? This workshop will explore how we can leverage quality improvement and implementation science methodology to advance environmental health initiatives across different pediatric disciplines, highlighting both primary care and specialist perspectives.
The session will begin with a primer on quality improvement and implementation science methodology (led by Corinna Rea and Kathleen Walsh) followed by examples of environmental QI projects that are showcased by project leaders. Primary care highlights include QI efforts to improve lead screening and management (Marissa Hauptman), reduce paper waste (Sandra Jee), and integrate climate-related anticipatory guidance into well-child visits (Shalini Shah). Highlighted subspecialties include emergency/integrative medicine (Shiu-Lin Tsai) sharing a hospital linen sustainability effort in the Columbia emergency department, infectious disease (Lucie Fan) with an antibiotic stewardship sustainability project at Emory, cardiology (Mary Mullen, Director of Pulmonary Hypertension at Boston Children’s) and hospital medicine (Lisa Patel, Stanford/Executive Director of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health).
The remainder of our session will encourage discussion among participants on environment and climate-related health issues. Participants will share perspectives on QI project ideas/interventions relevant to their discipline and brainstorm strategies to facilitate implementation.
We invite trainees and participants to join us to connect with others who share interests in environmental health, sustainability, and climate change. Our goal is to learn from one another, sharing methods and resources to better incorporate environmental and climate perspectives at our respective institutions.
