Session
Description: Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is becoming rapidly available to many pediatric subspecialties given its portability and increasing affordability. There is also the benefit of having no ionizing radiation, which is ideal in children. Compared to adult specialties, uptake of POCUS has been slower in the pediatric settings due to lack of experience, education opportunities, and/or limited trained providers. Despite this, many pediatrics departments are starting to use or have a desire to use POCUS, and would benefit from increased exposure and education.
This hot topic symposium will walk through a variety of POCUS guided procedures including needle guidance for vascular access, line placement confirmation, lumbar puncture, arthrocentesis, nerve blocks, foreign body removal, abscess drainage, and endotracheal tube placement confirmation. It will be led by POCUS-trained faculty who practice in a variety of pediatric clinical settings including emergency medicine, PICU, NICU, and rheumatology.
The first part of the symposium will expose the learner to examples of POCUS guided pediatric procedures, and will discuss evidence that supports the enhanced efficacy/ safety of the procedures. During the second part there will be time to discuss basic implementation of POCUS guided procedures based on the panel members’ own experiences. We will also allow time for questions and answers.
