Description: To combat rising rates of youth suicide, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (ASFP) established the national Youth Suicide Prevention Ambassador Program in 2022. This grant supported project paired AAP fellows with their AFSP peers to enhance community suicide prevention efforts using the AAP’s Blueprint for Youth Suicide Prevention as a guide. This symposia will provide insight and outcomes from the first cohort of the program.
Collaborating for Youth Suicide Prevention: Overview of the Suicide Prevention Ambassador Program.
Kristen Kaseeska, MPH (AAP Manager, Suicide Prevention) will provide an overview of the project including an overview of national data surrounding youth suicide in the US, describe, the Blueprint for Youth Suicide Prevention, the Suicide Prevention Ambassador ECHO program, and data from the Suicide Prevention Ambassadors from the initial cohort of the program. (20 minutes)
Engaging youth and community partners in suicide prevention: The Maryland experience.
Suzanne Rybczynski, MD, MSHCM, FAAP (Maryland Chapter AAP Suicide Prevention Ambassador) will describe accomplishments of the MDAAP including presentation of youth developed suicide prevention educational videos and describe the inaugural Maryland Youth Suicide Prevention Summit. (20 minutes)
Engaging pediatricians and pediatric health care providers in suicide prevention: the Mississippi experience.
Morgan Buerke, MA (Mississippi Chapter AFSP Suicide Prevention Ambassador) will describe collaboration between AFSP and AAP ambassadors to educate pediatric clinicians about youth suicide and present data from a survey of Mississippi pediatric clinicians regarding youth suicide prevention. (20 minutes)
The session concludes with a 30 minute Q&A session.
