Session
Description: Our three speakers will address the tracking of sucking and feeding outcomes across preterm and full-term infants from the newborn period to early childhood, with a focus on their associations with neurodevelopment. Dr. Steven Barlow, Co-Chair of the Neonatal Feeding Club, will introduce the session and highlight biomechanical and oral feeding data collected from his laboratory across clinical trial studies. Dr. Emily Zimmerman, Club Co-Chair, will present data on the associations between infant sucking and neurodevelopment. Dr. Samudragupta Bora, Invited Speaker, will discuss associations between neonatal feeding, early nutrition, and short- and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in children born preterm across both high-income and low- and middle-income countries. Three themes will be highlighted: 1) the current state of evidence on early nutritional influences on neurodevelopment; 2) neonatal feeding and early nutrition as a critical early intervention pathway to optimize neurodevelopment; 3) challenges to optimizing early nutrition in low- and middle-income countries, which have the highest burden of preterm births worldwide, and identify priorities through a health equity lens to improve neurodevelopmental outcomes. There will be a question-and-answer session following the presentations.
