Description: There is a translation chasm between the rich world of pediatric pharmacokinetic studies and improved patient dosing at the bedside. Model-informed precision dosing (MIPD) is a paradigm-shifting tool that can help prescribers create individualized doses for children, instead of current population-based drug dosing. MIPD can be used in various populations including (1) stages of rapid organ development, (2) organ impairment, (3) drug-drug interactions or (4) in drug with high risk and narrow therapeutic index, among others.
Talk 1: Are you less familiar with the terms “pharmacokinetics”, “modeling and simulation”, and “model-informed precision dosing”, but would like an improved understanding to connect these concepts to your practice? In addition to receiving an introduction to these concepts, you will also learn the basics of pharmacokinetic modeling and pharmacometrics for pediatrics.
Talk 2: The underpinnings for MIPD to support clinical decisions were established in the 1960s. Although these concepts have been utilized with significant impact in advancing MIPD broadly, little progress has been made in advancing clinical therapeutics on an individual patient level. Many of the intellectual and technological barriers no longer impede the progress toward a more data-driven and MIPD paradigm for routine clinical care.
Talk 3: This talk will briefly review the components of MIPD and discuss how these principles are being implemented at the patient’s bedside via the Pharmacokinetic Consultation Service at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Talk 4: During this talk, a NIH-funded feasibility study of MIPD in the NICU will be described, including presentation of novel research data.
