WIP 90 - Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children with Down Syndrome: Perspectives and Experiences of Healthcare Practitioners and Caregivers in Canada

Background: In recent years, our understanding of the cooccurrence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children with Down Syndrome (DS) has evolved significantly, with some studies emphasizing that these conditions not only coexist but also underscore the increased risk of ASD in children with DS. While the co-occurrence of ASD and DS is increasingly recognized, there is still a significant gap in our understanding of caregivers' awareness regarding this dual diagnosis. Furthermore, healthcare practitioners' perspectives and practices, particularly those of family physicians and pediatricians, in the context of ASD-DS, remain relatively unexplored in Canada. In light of these gaps, this study aims to address two questions, as their clarification holds the potential to impact the timely identification and diagnosis of ASD in children with DS, thus enhancing access to interventions.

Objective: Firstly, what are the perspectives of family physicians and pediatricians in Canada regarding the co-occurrence of ASD in children with DS, and how do these perspectives influence their clinical practices? Secondly, what is the level of awareness and experience among caregivers of children with DS in Canada regarding the co-occurrence of ASD?

Design/Methods: This cross-sectional study utilizes structured surveys for physicians and caregivers of children with DS up to 17 years old in Canada, recruited through medical and DS associations, respectively. We will utilize two survey instruments with closed-ended and open-ended questions. Data will be collected at a single point in time through Redcap, with links sent via email to target groups, ensuring data security and anonymity. Descriptive statistics will analyze quantitative data. Qualitative responses will undergo analysis using a constructivist modified grounded theory approach. Ethical approval will be sought from the University of Toronto's Research Ethics Board. The study received departmental approval and anticipates participant recruitment to commence by year-end, with data analysis expected to be available by March 2024.
