Chief Resident Phoenix Children's Phoenix, Arizona, United States
Background: Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals.[1] Surgery and internal medicine education leaders administered grit scales to residents and found higher grit scores correlated with lower burnout and higher burnout scores with lower grit.[2][3] With increasing physician burnout and job dysphoria, it is critical to determine how grit correlates with wellbeing for pediatric trainees and ways to maintain and grow grit. Objective: 1. Evaluate pediatric residents baseline grit scores and changes through training 2. Correlate grit and wellbeing index scores Design/Methods: This is a longitudinal, descriptive study of residents in Phoenix Children’s Pediatric Residency Program Alliance. Three anonymous, voluntary surveys will be administered throughout AY 2023-24. Surveys include the validated GRIT-S questionnaire, Mayo Well-Being Index (WBI), and prompts to identify personal passions. Residents will receive information about their scores immediately upon completion of each survey and be invited to complete each survey regardless of prior participation.
Established curricular elements include quarterly professional development sessions, individualized learning plans, and advisor meeting with coaching. New interventions include 1 mandatory workshop to identify a group mission, vision, and passion. Project leaders will teach residents concepts of grit and methods to grow grit intrinsically and extrinsically.[1] Grit and WBI scores will be compared across each collection point using a repeated measures one-way ANOVA. Pairwise comparisons between the scores will be conducted using paired t-tests. Descriptive statistics, 95% CI, and exploratory analyses (Pearson correlation coefficients) will be provided for all relevant variables. Comparisons between subjects’ participation in surveys will use Chi-squared, Fisher's exact, or the Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, as appropriate.
By investigating the intersection of grit and wellbeing and the evolution of grit over training, we hope to better understand how residents can start and sustain their careers with passion and purpose.
