Pediatric Resident Physician Emory University Residency - - Atlanta, GA Decatur, Georgia, United States
Background: Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of deaths for all people from ages 1-44 and the fifth leading cause of death for infants. Unintentional injuries can be decreased via injury prevention counseling. One way to provide such counseling is via Safety Baby Showers (SBS) which are educational events that can improve expectant parent knowledge of infant injury prevention topics. Additionally, pediatric resident physicians are resources for families but do not always discuss injury prevention during patient encounters. In one study, less than half of pediatric residents mentioned injury prevention in well-child visits, and when an injury prevention topic was introduced, approximately one minute was devoted to the topic. Objective: Our goal is to implement a quarterly sustainable SBS program into an existing prenatal care setting. We aim to increase both pediatric residents’ and expectant parents' knowledge of and comfort with infant injury prevention topics by at least 20% within 1 year of attending an SBS based on pre- and post-survey data. Design/Methods: IRB approval was obtained. We assessed baseline data of pediatric resident knowledge and comfort with infant injury prevention topics via RedCap survey. We will again conduct surveys in early Spring 2024 to compare residents who participate in SBS with those who did not. The SBS are conducted with Centering Pregnancy, a group prenatal care model for cohorts of low socioeconomic expectant mothers with similar pregnancy dates. Curricula were developed on infant-specific injury prevention topics (child passenger safety, home safety, safe sleep, etc.). At each SBS, we provide written material, hold interactive safety stations using our curricula, and distribute safety devices to incentivize parents to practice injury prevention. The first SBS took place in September 2023 with the remainder to be conducted in early 2024. Parents complete pre- and post-SBS RedCap surveys to assess SBS effectiveness. Follow-up surveys with parents are planned to evaluate retention of topics and changes in attitudes/beliefs.
